Telcom Networks is a superfast internet provider delivering business broadband services in Manchester for the last 18 months. We are passionate about what we do and this shines in our customer-focused approach. When we launched Telcom we decided to publicly speak about our achievements and milestones, not for things that we’ll promise to do.
Earlier this year we launched our residential services, and this post is to discuss the technologies we’ve used and the approach we take as we roll-out our services in the UK. The Green Quarter in Manchester has become a Gigablock, and one of the most advanced apartment blocks in the North in regards to connectivity.
Looking back we are proud to have got involved in the development of the project and all of the milestones we have achieved in the process of delivering services. We tried and tested many different technologies and we decided to go with the one that is most forward thinking. Delivering one of the fastest connections in the world is not an easy task but we thought if companies such as Google Fibre are working to implement a similar technology in America then we are capable of doing it in the UK market.
How we deliver our superfast broadband services
The architecture that we’ve implemented is described under the Passive Optical Networks (PON) standards which were introduced in 1995. The PON architecture takes advantage of the wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) technology and is used in different network implementations mostly for backbone connectivity. What we do is use this PON technology to deliver Fibre To The Home (FTTH).
What are the advantages of using this technology?
Our service is pure fibre connecting to the backbone and out to the cloud up to your apartment (Figure 1), meaning that we don’t use copper, at all. The only copper you might find is in your end if you use an ethernet cable to connect to our router instead of wireless.

Also this technology allows us to simplify things for our customers as they don’t require to pay for a landline rental. We’re among the first no-phone-line rental ISPs in the UK giving to our customers the freedom to pay for what they want, moving away from the obsolete approach of most ISPs in the market. In the case our customers wish to have a phone line we provide VoIP services.
The result: Happy customers - Speed on tap!
We are capable to deliver speeds of up to 1Gbps which with small changes can be upgraded to 10Gbit/s once there is a need for this kind of speed. We are capable to deliver symmetrical connections with exact-match speeds, no more ‘up-to’ claims leaving you wondering what speed you will get. So you pay 30 Mbit/s, 120 Mbit/s or 1000Mbit/s (1Gbit/s) you get these exact speeds in both upload and download.
At the moment we work with apartment blocks (Gigablocks!) but we hope to have an update for you soon, as we said only after we achieve our goals we will publicly discuss them.
