Communication technology is constantly developing, today it’s become a mainstream utility seen in the same light as water and electricity. The demand for internet based services has exploded over the last two decades, and seen growth few would have predicted at the time. The benefits of VoIP, a prime example of a product which is growing rapidly in popularity in the communication sector, might not be obvious to those who have not experienced the technology, so we thought we would share a case study with you.

In the modern world, it is essential to be flexible

Let me start with a brief overview. The way in which we use VoIP technology gives us the ability to work remotely, by adding a layer of flexibility which a normal landline isn’t advanced enough to provide. This is important for the culture of the business we want to create. On top of this there are elements that might be more important depending on the type of work you do. For instance, if for every call you miss causes your business to lose money then it is a critical for you to be able to answer the phone no matter where you are.

But how does all this come together? Trying to explain a technology like this one and its capabilities usually ends up with big lists with features and attributes but it is hard to truly relate these to the benefit you can get from it. To avoid doing so, I am going to share with you how we use VoIP to enhance our team happiness, and as a result, performance too.

It’s pleasantly straightforward and easy to operate

Some months back when we first enabled our internal VoIP platform we began experimenting in many different ways with it. As tech people we enjoy doing this sort of thing, but we were pleasantly surprised at how simple it was to operate. One of the things we found particularly useful, as mentioned previously is the fact that having a VoIP system means you can connect your mobile device to your VoIP subscription service. So you can be anywhere in the world and, as long as you have a data connection, you’ll be able to accept and place calls like you are in the office, both via landline, and also from a mobile device.

Working away from the office can now be a stress free experience

I used this feature myself last summer when I needed to speak with my team while I was on the opposite side of Europe. I was able to call an internal extension number and host a conference call with three other people over the course of more than an hour. There are three things I’d like to point out here:

  • First of all, the cost for all this was £0, (No your eyes are not deceiving you, this is a zero!).
  • Second, I managed to communicate with my team as if I was just next door
  • Finally VoIP systems give you an opportunity to go the extra mile for your customers,

It was difficult to quantify the effect that this had on my colleagues and myself, but knowing that I wasn’t going to be completely out of action during my time abroad, but it was clear that we all had peace of mind, knowing we could continue to communicate effectively.

Making customer calls from the beach

Using our VoIP system, I was able to converse with customers using my mobile, but it was my office number which appeared on the caller display, as a result the customers had the exact same experience they would have had if I was in the office rather than on the beach!
